Supergirl Became Number One on HBO Max, but…
Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie, hadn’t achieved the box office success Warner Bros. had hoped for. Reportedly with a budget of around $170-186 million, the film grossed only about $126 million worldwide. However, things seem to have changed since its arrival on HBO Max on September 10th. Supergirl quickly became one of the platform’s most-watched titles, although the extent of this success is still unclear.
Supergirl Tops HBO Max Charts
According to third-party tracking services, Supergirl has risen to number one on HBO Max’s US chart and also ranked highly globally. The film had previously topped the Apple TV store for digital rentals and purchases. This clearly shows that the weak interest in theaters has somewhat recovered in the home market.
The problem is that HBO Max hasn’t yet released the actual numbers showing how many people watched the film. Currently, we only have rankings. A film being number one on a list could indicate millions of viewers, or it could simply mean it outnumbered its competitors that week.
Neither Warner Bros. Discovery, James Gunn, nor Peter Safran have made any official statements regarding Supergirl’s viewership figures. Measurement companies like Nielsen, Samba TV, and Luminate haven’t yet released concrete viewership data either. Therefore, it’s too early to consider HBO Max’s success as a direct reflection of its box office performance.
However, the future of the Supergirl character continues independently. Milly Alcock has been confirmed to reprise her role as Kara Zor-El in the Man of Tomorrow film, set to be released on July 9, 2027. In short, Supergirl seems to have a second chance on the digital side, but we need to wait for the actual viewership figures to understand the true extent of its reach.
