PlayStation Pulled the Plug on PHYSINT During a Zoom Meeting
PHYSINT, announced as Hideo Kojima’s next-generation action-spy project, was initially supported by PlayStation. However, after Sony withdrew from the project, the game continued under the Xbox umbrella. Now, Kojima has explained how this decision was communicated to him. According to the renowned producer, PlayStation’s decision to cease funding was not conveyed in person, but during a Zoom meeting.
PHYSINT’s PlayStation Era Ends with a Zoom Meeting
Kojima states that during the meeting, he was told that PlayStation would no longer be able to fund PHYSINT, and he was surprised. He says he didn’t feel anger or sadness at first, but rather focused on what to do next. He added that the situation created a serious problem for the studio and that he couldn’t immediately explain it to his employees.
Kojima Productions also responded to some recent allegations. The studio emphasized that comments suggesting a breakdown in the relationship with PlayStation, that the commercial performance of the Death Stranding series influenced the decision, or that PHYSINT’s production plans were problematic, were not based on official sources.
The company also stated that its financial situation is healthy and that the PHYSINT development process continues with Xbox. They also stressed that their relationship with PlayStation remains strong, specifically stating that the publisher change does not represent a complete break between the two parties.
The revelation that Sony withdrew from such a large project via a Zoom call might sound surprising. However, judging by Kojima’s account, the decision was communicated quite directly. Despite the publisher change, PHYSINT continues and is now being developed with Xbox support.
