Xbox Series X Can Now Run PS5 Games
The Xbox Series X has managed to launch some PlayStation 5 games thanks to a new emulator that works through developer mode. The open-source project, called PS5X, is an adaptation of the KytyPS5 emulator to Microsoft’s console. While the system is still in its early stages and the compatibility list is extremely limited, the ability to run PS5 software on Xbox is a remarkable technical achievement in itself.
Some PS5 Games Run on Xbox Series X
Prepared by YouTuber Devran Cosmo Uenal, PS5X utilizes the Xbox Series X’s Developer Mode feature. Currently, several games such as GEX Trilogy, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, Marvel Cosmic Invasion, and Quake II can be run on the emulator. These titles detect input from the Xbox controller, and some also have audio support.
One of the most notable examples is Quake II. The shared screenshots show the game running at approximately 25 to 45 FPS. However, this performance doesn’t necessarily mean the emulator can run PS5 games smoothly. Graphics compatibility remains one of the project’s biggest challenges.
This is primarily because KytyPS5 uses Vulkan on the PC side. Since the Xbox Series X doesn’t natively support Vulkan, the image processing path needs to be converted to DirectX 12. This means that improvements made on the PC version cannot be directly transferred to the Xbox port, significantly slowing down progress.
The developer states that they also utilize some AI tools in the code conversion between graphics technologies, but the extent of their role in the project is not yet explained. PS5 emulation on Xbox Series X is currently experimental, so don’t expect major exclusive games to run flawlessly anytime soon. Nevertheless, the progress of the project is quite interesting in terms of demonstrating what the emulation community is capable of.
