The Resident Evil Movie Shattered Box Office Records for the Series

Resident Evil may have changed the fate of the series on the big screen with its new film directed by Zach Cregger. Just days after its release, the film had an opening that surpassed previous Resident Evil titles. Moreover, this performance exceeded pre-release predictions. With strong reviews and audience interest combined, it seems the series is recovering after Welcome to Raccoon City in 2021.

Resident Evil Breaks Series Record on Opening Weekend

According to shared box office data, the film earned $60 million in its North American opening weekend. With $48.3 million from the international market, the global opening reached $108.3 million. This easily surpassed the $26 million opening record set by the 2010 film Resident Evil: Afterlife in North America.

This chart is even more remarkable considering the series’ recent history. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, despite a budget of approximately $25 million, only grossed $42 million worldwide. The new film’s budget is reportedly $75 million, and it has already surpassed that figure significantly in its first weekend.

The film’s critical reception also supports its box office success. Resident Evil currently boasts a very high score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ on CinemaScore. The interest shown by young audiences in the horror genre is thought to have significantly contributed to its opening performance.

The film’s final scene, however, has divided audiences. While some fans debate the direction the story took, director Zach Cregger says generating ideas for possible sequels is inevitable. This box office start seems strong enough to pave the way for new Resident Evil films.
