The Design of Murphy’s Pendant in TRON Legacy has been Revealed

A newly leaked concept art from the development process of TRON Legacy reveals a planned but unfulfilled possibility for the series. The shared design shows Cillian Murphy’s Edward Dillinger Jr. character reimagined as the iconic villain Sark. Dillinger Jr., who had a brief cameo appearance in the TRON universe, appears to have been considered for a much larger role.

Planned Sark Interpretation in TRON Legacy

The concept art was shared by artist Phil Saunders, who worked on the film in its early stages. Saunders stated that this drawing was one of the first jobs given to him by production designer Darren Gilford. The aim was to create a visual presentation to bring Cillian Murphy back to the project with a more comprehensive role.

According to the planned scenario, Edward Dillinger Jr. would not have been merely a background character; instead, he would have taken over the Sark identity we saw in the first TRON film, positioning himself at the center. This approach aimed to build the new threat of the digital world on a classic legacy, thus creating a strong antagonist foundation for the planned sequels after TRON Legacy.

Saunders’ design clearly shows the influence of Moebius. The character’s armor and silhouette are both a tribute to the original Sark and have a more modern, fluid line. The design maintains TRON’s neon aesthetic while creating a more alien and menacing aura. This offered the potential to add a different depth to Murphy’s character.

However, the project did not proceed in this direction. Murphy’s character was not expanded in TRON Legacy except for a brief preparatory moment, and the series’ subsequent plans changed. This resulting concept art has taken its place in the archives as an interesting “what if” scenario, reminiscent of one of the alternative paths the TRON universe could have taken.
