The Official Release Date for Directive 8020 has been Announced
Directive 8020, the first game in Supermassive Games’ new season in the Dark Pictures Anthology universe, has finally received a confirmed release date. Previously delayed, the game’s release date has been announced along with a new trailer, and pre-orders are now open. Combining science fiction and survival horror, the game is poised to usher in a new era in the series.
Directive 8020 Released May 12, 2026
According to Supermassive Games’ official announcement, Directive 8020 will be released on May 12, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game is currently available for pre-order, and those who pre-order will receive a free Digital Deluxe upgrade.
The game was originally scheduled for release in October 2025. However, following layoffs at the studio in July 2025, the project was postponed to 2026. This delay was stated to be necessary to address the game as a larger and more ambitious production.
Directive 8020 takes place in a future where Earth has become uninhabitable. A crew, hoping to find a new home for humanity, travels to another planet where they encounter a shape-shifting alien organism. Any member of the crew could actually be “it,” adding significant paranoia and tension to the game.
The lead role is played by Lashana Lynch, known for The Woman King. As in previous games in the series, player choices directly impact the course of the story. Which character survives or who becomes the victim depends entirely on the decisions made.
This is the first main Dark Pictures game since The Devil in Me, released in 2022. Supermassive had previously stated its desire to move away from the pressure of an annual calendar and focus on producing larger, more elaborate projects. Directive 8020 is seen as the first serious step in this direction.
