The Yakuza Kiwami Series is Ending, a New Series is Coming
The end seems near for the Yakuza Kiwami series. Masayoshi Yokoyama of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio announced that the Kiwami franchise will conclude with the third game. Yakuza Kiwami 3, set to be released on February 12th, is not just a remake; it will also mark the series’ final chapter and usher in a completely new era.
Yakuza Kiwami 3 Will Herald a New Series
In a recent livestream, Masayoshi Yokoyama explicitly stated that the Kiwami brand will end here. According to him, the next installment will not be a numbered sequel like “Like A Dragon 9.” A completely new series will begin, progressing along a different path and with a different meaning. Yokoyama’s words suggest that the details of this change will only become clearer when Yakuza Kiwami 3 is played.
The game, releasing on February 12th, is a modern remake of the 2009 game Yakuza 3. But the package isn’t limited to that. It will be offered with an expansion pack called “Dark Ties.” In this DLC, players will control Yoshitaka Mine, the antagonist from Yakuza 3, and experience a prequel focusing on his time joining the Tojo Clan.
Structurally, this version adopts a presentation model similar to Sonic x Shadow Generations. Players can decide whether to start the main story or the Dark Ties content first.
This approach brings together those who want to relive the classic story and those curious about the side story. Yakuza Kiwami 3 is not just a remake; it’s also a critical turning point for RPG’s future plans. The end of the series could actually herald a brand new beginning.
