The Witcher 4 Could Have Had Geralt in the Lead Role Instead of Ciri, but…
CD Projekt Red is making a significant change to the series with The Witcher 4, shifting the lead role from Geralt to Ciri. While this decision is still debated among some fans, the game’s narrative leader, Philipp Weber, revealed that he himself wanted Geralt to remain the main character early in development. According to Weber, the team eventually became convinced that placing Ciri at the center of the new game was the right direction.
The Witcher 4 Team Initially Considered the Idea of Geralt
In a response to a player on social media who said they didn’t want to control Ciri instead of Geralt, Philipp Weber stated that he had similar thoughts early in development. Therefore, he said he understands why some players are having difficulty parting with Geralt, adding that the team is now at a very different point regarding Ciri.
One of CD Projekt Red’s most important goals is to show players that Ciri deserves to be the new main character of the series. Weber says the team is taking this responsibility very seriously. Ciri, who was a significant part of the story in The Witcher 3, will move from being a supporting character to being at the center of the entire narrative in the new game.
This change doesn’t mean Geralt will be completely sidelined. Weber specifically emphasizes that the character will always have an important role in The Witcher universe. It was previously confirmed that Geralt will also be in The Witcher 4’s story, but the extent of his role has not yet been revealed.
Judging by CD Projekt Red’s approach, The Witcher 4 aims to start a new era through Ciri rather than completely leaving Geralt’s legacy behind. The fact that even some members of the development team initially struggled to adjust to this change shows that the decision was seriously debated within the studio. Now, the team seems much more confident that Ciri can be the new face of the series.
