Fable Showcases New Combat System at Gamescom 2026
Xbox Game Studios and Playground Games have released a new 16-minute combat gameplay video for Fable. Shared as part of Gamescom 2026, the footage shows how the rebooted series will combine melee combat, ranged attacks, and magic within the same system. Instead of being stuck with a single fighting style, players will be able to change their methods depending on the enemy they encounter.
Fable Combat System Combines Three Different Styles
The new footage reveals that one of the most important aspects of Fable’s combat system is the seamless transition between melee combat, ranged attacks, and magic. Players can approach an enemy with a weapon and then switch to a ranged attack or use different spells a few seconds later. Playground Games aims to prevent combat from being tied to a single attack pattern.
Players will be able to experiment with different equipment combinations to create their own combat setup. Spells won’t be used alone; combining various spells will create more powerful combinations. This structure will ensure that character development in Albion is influenced not only by stats but also by the player’s preferred fighting style.
The new gameplay video features familiar creatures from the series alongside new threats prepared for Albion. According to Playground Games, players’ approach to encounters will largely be left to their own choices. It will be possible to fight aggressively at close range, move with controlled attacks from a distance, or create a magic-focused character.
Fable will be released on February 23, 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. The PC version will be available on Steam and the Microsoft Store, while the game will also be available in the Game Pass library from day one. Images from Gamescom 2026 show that the long-awaited game is preparing to give players a great deal of freedom of movement, especially in combat.
