Xbox’s Physical Strategy Could Change Sony’s Plans

Sony’s plans to reduce physical game releases on PlayStation and eventually phase out disc usage in the long term have been discussed for some time. While it’s been suggested that the company considers the end of 2028 a critical threshold, a new claim suggests this timeline may no longer be definitive. Rumors circulating during Gamescom 2026 claim that Sony is re-evaluating its plans, particularly due to Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox strategy.

Sony Concerned About Xbox’s Physical Gaming Move

According to an unconfirmed rumor reported by Eurogamer Spain, Sony is considering postponing its plan to move away from physical games by one or two years. The main reason behind this is said to be Microsoft’s alleged strategy for its new Xbox console, codenamed Project Helix. It is claimed that Sony is worried about losing disc-loving players and streamers to its rival.

Xbox's Physical Strategy Could Change Sony's Plans

Microsoft is reportedly describing its new console as “100% physical” in discussions with publishers. The rumor suggests that Project Helix will not only support physical games but also offer a system allowing users to convert their discs to digital licenses. Xbox’s recently announced disc-to-digital conversion initiative makes these claims even more compelling.

It’s also said that pressure on Sony isn’t coming solely from Microsoft. During Gamescom, some third-party publishers reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with PlayStation’s physical game plans, creating tension regarding marketing and platform support. It’s even claimed that a major game company is considering not releasing a significant title on PlayStation if a physical version isn’t guaranteed. It’s specifically noted that this company is not Rockstar.

For now, none of this information has been officially confirmed by Sony or Microsoft. Therefore, both Project Helix’s 100% physical strategy and Sony’s schedule changes remain purely rumored. However, if Microsoft truly plans to leverage physical games as a significant advantage in the next generation, it wouldn’t be surprising if Sony slowed down its disc-based strategy.
