There are Almost No Physical Game Stores for PlayStation
PlayStation’s game purchasing habits continue to change rapidly. According to Sony’s latest financial report, the majority of sales are now made through the digital store. While this may seem somewhat worrying for players who love disc games, physical copies, and the feeling of collecting, the complete disappearance of physical games doesn’t seem like a likely scenario for now.
The Digital Sales Era is Strengthening in PlayStation Games
According to Sony’s latest quarterly report, 85% of PlayStation game sales were made digitally. This shows that the share of physical games in total sales has fallen to only 15%. What is more striking is the long-term change. Approximately 10 years ago, the digital sales rate on PlayStation was around 19%. The current situation clearly shows how quickly players are transitioning from physical games to digital libraries.
There are many reasons for this shift. Digital games are easier to purchase, offer pre-loading options, and eliminate the hassle of waiting for a physical copy. The ability to play major games immediately upon release makes digital sales even more attractive. New PlayStation games like Marvel’s Wolverine are also expected to see digital codes and online purchasing habits become even more dominant.
However, it’s too early to say that physical games are completely gone. While 15% may seem small, on the scale of PlayStation, this still represents millions of physical game sales. It’s unlikely Sony will simply ignore this player base. Disc games remain a valuable option, especially for collectors, secondhand game buyers, and users who truly value a sense of ownership.
On the other hand, the weak PlayStation 5 sales in the last quarter are noteworthy. The increase in console prices, especially the PS5 Pro reaching $900, creates a significant cost for new users. Despite this, the continued rise in digital game sales shows that Sony remains strong in terms of revenue. With the release of blockbuster games like GTA 6, more players are expected to switch to the PS5 ecosystem, but for physical gamers, the direction of the industry is now much clearer: boxes are slowly disappearing from shelves, while digital libraries continue to grow.
