Unreal Engine 6 will Place AI at its Center

Unreal Engine 6 has generated great interest in the gaming world since its initial unveiling. Epic Games aims for the new engine not only to deliver more realistic visuals but also to change the way developers create content. However, the announcements made at the State of Unreal presentation sparked a new debate between players and developers, particularly regarding the role of generative AI.

Unreal Engine 6 Aims to Accelerate Content Creation

Epic Games announced that generative AI models and large language models will play a significant role in the Unreal Engine 6 roadmap. The company argues that these tools will help developers create content faster, reduce repetitive tasks, and shorten testing processes. The announcements also mention that models like Claude and Codex could play a role in this new era.

Epic’s blog post stated that the “model-driven production” approach could speed up the workflow for creative teams. According to the company, developers could complete some processes that require manual preparation in a shorter time with the help of artificial intelligence. The goal, according to the company, is to reduce time-consuming aspects of game production and enable teams to develop content faster.

However, this approach hasn’t pleased everyone. Unreal Engine 5 has been criticized in recent years for performance and optimization issues in many major games. Therefore, some players believe that the priority of the new engine should be to produce more robust and well-optimized games, not to speed up content creation. The emphasis on artificial intelligence further exacerbates these concerns.

Epic CEO Tim Sweeney has previously openly expressed his positive view on artificial intelligence. Therefore, the emphasis on these technologies in Unreal Engine 6 is not surprising. Nevertheless, the use of generative AI in the gaming industry remains a sensitive issue. Unreal Engine 6 may be a significant step forward technically, but whether this step will empower creativity or make the production process more controversial remains to be seen.
