Xbox CEO Considers Call of Duty Bigger Than Marvel
Xbox has recently been making headlines not only for its gaming projects but also for its expansion into Hollywood. In a comprehensive report prepared by Entertainment Weekly to celebrate Xbox’s 25th anniversary, the company’s new CEO, Asha Sharma, made some noteworthy statements. Following the success of the Fallout series, the box office performance of the Minecraft movie, and adaptation projects like Gears of War and Sea of Thieves, the conversation quickly turned to Call of Duty. Sharma made a rather bold claim here.
XBOX Trusts in the Power of the Call of Duty Brand
In the Entertainment Weekly report, alongside Asha Sharma, Todd Howard, Matt Booty, and other Xbox executives also evaluated the current state of game adaptations. It’s clear that games have been increasingly successfully adapted into film and television in recent years. Fallout achieved immense success on Amazon. The Minecraft movie also became one of the most talked-about productions of 2025. Xbox sees this momentum not just as a short-term opportunity, but as a new door for its brand to reach wider audiences.
Matt Booty expressed his excitement about a live-action Gears of War movie, while Mark Grigsby of Infinity Ward said a Call of Duty movie was a big dream of his. Todd Howard stated that the third season of the Fallout series would expand into areas never before seen in the games. On top of that, it was announced that a Sea of Thieves movie is in development. In short, Xbox seems determined to grow its brands on the big screen and television.
However, the most striking comment came from Asha Sharma. Sharma said that Xbox wouldn’t completely dominate the film and television world, but the results so far are quite promising. She then claimed that Call of Duty is bigger than the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This statement is powerful, even somewhat controversial, because Sharma didn’t provide concrete numbers to support this comparison.
Nevertheless, looking at the revenue side, the reason for this claim becomes clear. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has grossed over $31.5 billion at the box office, while Call of Duty is said to have reached approximately $32 billion. Of course, it’s very important to know what criteria are used to measure “big” here. Box office, game sales, brand value, cultural impact, and audience are not the same thing. Nevertheless, it’s very clear how much confidence Xbox has in Call of Duty.
