A Divinity Fan Claims to Have Found the Game’s True Villain
Divinity, Larian Studios’ major project marking their return to their fantasy universe after Baldur’s Gate 3, is already being closely followed. Official information about the game is still quite scarce, but fans aren’t sitting idle. Every detail, from the symbols in the trailer to the characters’ clothing, is being scrutinized, and the latest theory claims to have found the central threat at the heart of the story.
The Main Villain of Divinity Could Be the Lord of Chaos
YouTube content creator WolfheartFPS, while examining behind-the-scenes footage of the announcement trailer, focused on the symbols on the crowned prisoner. The images, shared by Unit Image, who created the CGI scenes, showed the symbols much more clearly than in the trailer. Believing the symbols were inspired by the Elder Futhark, an ancient runic alphabet, the fan, after about five and a half hours of analysis, interpreted the text as “Chaos is coming.”
If this translation is accurate, the game’s main villain could be the Lord of Chaos, one of the oldest threats in the Divinity universe. Described in past stories as the creator of demons, this entity is one of the most dangerous divine powers for Rivellon. The fact that he is currently imprisoned in Tartarus, outside the mortal world, also aligns perfectly with the dark ritual and massive Hellstone structure seen in the trailer.
However, it’s too early to accept this theory as definitive. Since the Elder Futhark symbols cannot be translated literally into modern English, some speculation is necessary during interpretation. The phrase “Chaos is coming” could directly refer to the Lord of Chaos, or it could foreshadow a general destruction in Rivellon. Furthermore, some fans believe the crowned prisoner might be connected to a seemingly benevolent, hidden deity.
Larian Studios is currently keeping quiet about the main antagonist’s identity. The studio stated that playing previous Divinity games isn’t a requirement, but veteran fans will notice some connections. The return of the Lord of Chaos would delight long-time fans of the series and could introduce new players to Rivellon’s past. While the only concrete clue supporting the Divinity theory at the moment is the runes on the crown, it’s not hard to imagine that Larian didn’t place such details there for no reason.
