A Game Console was Made from a Broken Google Pixel 8

A broken phone is often put in a drawer or completely discarded. However, one user found a much more creative way to repurpose a Google Pixel 8 with a persistent pink line issue on its screen. By connecting the device to an external display, the user transformed the phone into a small game console offering multiplayer support. The result demonstrates just how much fun it can be to reuse old hardware.

Google Pixel 8 Turned into a Console for Old Games

In this custom setup, the Google Pixel 8 was connected to an external television and turned into a gaming hub. Instead of using only the Android interface, the user installed ES-DE, or EmulationStation Desktop Edition. This software compiles old game ROMs into a neat interface and allows for easy navigation with connected controllers. This allows the phone to offer a more console-like experience without being dependent on the touchscreen.

One of the best aspects of the setup is its multiplayer capability. The user connected multiple wired controllers simultaneously via a 4-port USB hub. This transformed the Pixel 8 from a single-player retro game console into a small entertainment system playable with friends. Playing old games on a large screen with physical controllers also significantly enhances the nostalgic experience.

Of course, the Pixel 8’s Tensor G3 processor still has enough power for emulation and retro gaming. However, since Google’s Tensor chips aren’t exactly innocent when it comes to overheating, the user considered this aspect as well. A 50mm PC fan powered by the USB hub provides active cooling to the phone. This aims to prevent performance drops during long gaming sessions.

In Reddit comments, some users mentioned that rooting and custom ROMs could further boost performance. Of course, such procedures aren’t suitable for everyone and require caution. Nevertheless, the fact that a Google Pixel 8 with a problematic screen can be transformed into a game console shows how useful old phones can still be with the right ideas. It was better fate to go into the boss fight instead of going to waste.
