Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Director Returns to Ubisoft
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla became one of Ubisoft’s biggest games, and Eric Baptizat, the project’s lead, was among the key figures shaping the modern era of the series. After leaving Ubisoft in 2021 to join EA Motive, the experienced developer has now rejoined his former team. Moreover, this time he will have a say not only in the future of a single game, but in the future of the entire Assassin’s Creed brand.
What Role Will the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Director Take On?
Eric Baptizat’s return to Ubisoft was announced by Assassin’s Creed content chief Jean Guesdon. Baptizat will serve as the brand’s new game director. This position represents a significant responsibility, shaping the overall gameplay of the series and ensuring consistency between future projects, rather than just the day-to-day development process of a single project.
Baptizat is no stranger to the Assassin’s Creed universe. During his 16 years at Ubisoft, he served as lead designer for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, senior designer for Unity, and director of Valhalla. He also made significant contributions to Origins, witnessing the series’ transition from its classic structure to its expansive open-world era.
After leaving Ubisoft, Baptizat joined EA Motive, where he directed the Dead Space remake and worked as design director on Battlefield 6. The positive reviews for Dead Space, in particular, demonstrated the experienced developer’s ability to create strong projects not only in open-world games but also in more controlled and atmospheric projects. This experience sparks curiosity about how Assassin’s Creed will evolve in the future.
Jean Guesdon stated that he is very excited about the future of the brand due to Baptizat’s experience, meticulousness, and aptitude for teamwork. Considering the series’ recent focus on different eras, gameplay styles, and remakes simultaneously, a shared creative vision is truly needed. The return of the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla director could be a strong indication that Ubisoft wants to bring the series back to a more consistent path.
