Black Ops 1 and 2 Crossplay and Matchmaking Details Revealed
Following the digital release of Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, there was confusion regarding the matchmaking system. Players debated whether different console generations could play together and whether season pass holders could be matched with other users. Activision’s announcement has clarified these uncertainties regarding Black Ops 1 and its sequel.
How Does Black Ops 1 Crossplay and Matchmaking System Work?
According to Activision’s statement, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 users will be able to join the same matchmaking pool in Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2. This means a user playing on PS5 can enter the same online match with friends using the PS4 version of the game. Matchmaking support between the two PlayStation generations has been officially confirmed.
However, the games don’t offer full cross-platform crossplay support. PlayStation 3 users won’t be able to join servers containing PS4 and PS5 players. There won’t be any matchmaking with Xbox or other hardware platforms either. The system will only function as a cross-generational link between PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions.
The issue with the season pass has also been clarified. Initial reports suggested that players with season passes couldn’t be matched with users without them. Activision has stated that season pass holders can match with other players normally. Therefore, owning downloadable maps will not result in being excluded from the main multiplayer matchmaking pool.
Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 were initially released digitally only on the PlayStation Store. Due to high demand, the store reportedly experienced short-term access issues, and players also criticized pricing and performance. Despite this, the latest announcement confirms that players with friends on different PlayStation generations will at least be able to play together.
