Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in the new Mummy Movie

The Mummy series is returning to its roots after many years, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz reuniting in the same project. Universal has officially announced the release of the new Mummy film, stating it will be released on May 19, 2028. This confirms the long-awaited return.

A New Era Begins in the Mummy Series

Brendan Fraser was the face of the trilogy that began with The Mummy in 1999 and ran until 2008. Rachel Weisz played a significant role in the first two films. Their reunion in the same project holds significant nostalgic meaning, especially for viewers who loved the original trilogy.

The new film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from the Radio Silence team. The screenplay is being handled by David Coggeshall, known for films like The Family Plan and Orphan: First Kill. Details about the story are being kept secret for now, but Universal’s long wait for a release date suggests the project is of great importance.

Sean Daniel, who previously produced the series, is returning. Daniel, the man behind the first three films and the 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise, is returning as a producer who knows this universe well. With the series having grossed $1.8 billion globally, expectations for the new film are already high.

Considering Fraser’s recent Oscar success and Weisz’s strong career, it seems the new installment of the Mummy series will not rely solely on nostalgia. While 2028 is still a long way off, the countdown has already begun for fans of the series.
