DualSense Will Now be Your New Wallet
DualSense controllers have once again found their place at the heart of payment systems, according to a new patent released by Sony. The patent suggests that players could make purchases on the PlayStation by simply bringing their smartphones or payment cards close to the controller. This would allow a significant portion of the payment process to be completed directly via the controller, eliminating the need to save card information to the console beforehand.
Payments via DualSense May Be Possible
The system described in the patent involves the user bringing their smartphone close to the PS5 controller. A screen then opens on the phone to complete the payment, and once the transaction is confirmed, the purchased content becomes visible on the console. Here, DualSense acts less like a wallet directly storing money and more like a bridge transmitting payment information.
This method could be particularly useful for players who don’t want to add a credit or debit card to their PlayStation account. Using the existing payment method on the phone could reduce the need to enter card information on the console side and make the purchase process a bit faster.
One of the patent drawings shows a physical payment card held close to the controller. This example shows that gift cards could be purchased using the card. Therefore, the system Sony is considering might not be limited to phone payments and could support various contactless payment options.
Of course, this payment system described for the DualSense is not yet a real PlayStation feature. Sony could use the technology in the patent in the future, completely change how it works, or never release it. Nevertheless, it’s quite interesting that the company is showing that it’s considering using the controller not just as a gaming device, but also for everyday transactions like payments.
