Exodus Side Quests Won’t Be Overkill
Archetype Entertainment, featuring names we know from Mass Effect, is taking a very clear approach for its new sci-fi RPG, Exodus. The studio specifically wants to avoid side quests that unnecessarily bloat the game and are added just “for the sake of doing it.”
Exodus Side Quests Will Support the Main Story
In an interview, the game’s narrative director, Drew Karpyshyn, discussed the main purpose of side quests in Exodus, stating that they want players to pursue this content because it genuinely interests them, not because they have to. According to him, side quests should serve the main story and contribute to a better understanding of the universe.
Karpyshyn emphasizes that they are deliberately avoiding the “doing quests for the next skill point” feeling often found in classic RPGs. In Exodus, side quests will certainly offer rewards, but the primary motivation is curiosity, the characters, and the themes of the story. The player should want to complete the quest even without a reward.
Companions are a crucial part of this approach. A large portion of the side quests will focus on the backstories, motivations, and central themes of the game. Ideas and story fragments that aren’t explored in detail on the main quest path will be deepened through side quests.
Karpyshyn also states that they are cautious about the amount of content. The development team doesn’t want to cram everything into one game; otherwise, they believe it could result in an experience lasting hundreds, even thousands of hours, but losing focus. Therefore, Exodus aims to offer a more cohesive, meaningful structure that respects the player’s time.
