Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Comes Without Discs Due to It’s Massive Size
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, while being released physically, will not contain the entire game on disc. Players will need to download additional data from the internet to complete the installation. The absence of this requirement in Remake and Rebirth has drawn criticism, particularly from physical game collectors, while director Naoki Hamaguchi previously stated that they chose this method to avoid compromising the quality of the final installment. Now, one of the most important technical reasons behind this decision has emerged.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Could Be Around 200 GB
According to Hamaguchi, the game’s file size is still not finalized, but the development team expects it to be around 200 GB. If this figure is achieved, Revelation will be even larger than Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which already comes on two discs. Considering the expansion of the world’s scale in the final installment of the series, this increase doesn’t seem surprising.
The director specifically notes that development is ongoing and the final file size may change. However, the 200GB estimate makes it clearer why Square Enix struggled to fit the entire game onto physical media. According to Hamaguchi, the team had to overcome the limitations of their current hardware at some point.
Canceling the physical release entirely wasn’t the team’s preferred option. Hamaguchi says that releasing a boxed version is still very important to them. Therefore, as a solution, the disc will be included in the box, but the remaining files will need to be downloaded via an online connection to run the game.
This doesn’t completely eliminate the main criticism from physical collectors. The fact that the disc alone cannot run the game without an internet connection raises questions about long-term game preservation. However, we now know that the decision stems not only from creative choices but also from the enormous size of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.
