Former Sony Executives Recreate Legendary PS4 Video
In 2013, Sony created one of the most memorable marketing videos of the PS4 era. The video, in which Shuhei Yoshida and Adam Boyes mocked the controversial Xbox One DRM plans by simply handing each other a physical game in just a few seconds, remained one of the most beloved jokes in PlayStation history for years. Thirteen years later, the duo reunited at Tokyo Game Show 2026 and recreated the same scene, this time in a very different context.
Sony’s Old PS4 Joke Reversed Years Later
In the original video, Yoshida hands Boyes a physical game case, demonstrating how simple it was to share games on PlayStation 4. At the time, Microsoft’s planned online verification and physical game restrictions for the Xbox One had drawn significant criticism. Sony had created a simple but effective video to turn this controversy to its advantage.
In the new version shown at Tokyo Game Show 2026, the duo repeats the same action, but without a physical game. This is where the real joke lies. Because PlayStation’s decision to gradually phase out physical disc production for new games by 2028 presents the old video in a completely different light today.
Years ago, Sony mocked its rival’s physical game policy, and now its own distancing itself from discs has become a major irony that gamers have long pointed out. It’s clear that Yoshida and Boyes are aware of this. The new video isn’t a direct official message from PlayStation management, but the former executives’ references to their own past have resulted in a rather amusing outcome.
The video, created for Sony in 2013, was once a symbol of a player-friendly approach. Recreating the same scene in 2026 without a physical game illustrates in a single frame how much the industry has changed in the last 13 years. In short, the old joke still works, only this time with a slightly different target.
