Glen Schofield has announced the end of his active game development career, which he has pursued for nearly four years. The creator of Dead Space and one of the co-founders of Sledgehammer Games, in an emotional video, paid tribute to the teams he worked with, his family, and the players he collaborated with. While acknowledging that the industry is going through a difficult period, Schofield offered hopeful messages for the future.
Glen Schofield Ends 35-Year Career
In a nearly four-minute video released on social media, Glen Schofield announced the end of his time developing games, managing teams, and leading projects. Announcing his official retirement from the daily work routine after 35 years, the developer thanked his family, friends, colleagues, and fans for their support throughout his career.
Schofield stated that players gave him honest feedback during both his successes and failures, and that this feedback helped him become a better developer. Throughout his career, Schofield worked for significant teams such as Crystal Dynamics, Visceral Games, Sledgehammer Games, and Striking Distance Studios, emphasizing that he had the opportunity to work with some of the world’s most talented people.
However, Schofield’s later years were not entirely smooth sailing. The Callisto Protocol, seen as a spiritual successor to Dead Space, received mixed reviews and underperformed commercially. Schofield later left Striking Distance Studios, which he co-founded, and his attempts to convince Electronic Arts to develop Dead Space 4 were unsuccessful.
In his farewell message, the experienced developer addressed the next generation of game developers. Despite the layoffs and economic problems in the industry, he expressed his belief that the future is bright. Glen Schofield advised young developers to experiment with new ideas, explore, and enjoy the production process, reminding them that the most important element in game development is always a strong idea.
