God of War Laufey is the Product of 10 Years of Work
God of War Laufey was one of the biggest surprises of the June 2026 PlayStation State of Play presentation. Over 20 minutes of gameplay footage shown at the end of the event revealed that the series would now be branching out in a different direction from Kratos’s Norse saga. This time, the story centers around Laufey, known to players as Faye. While it might seem like a fresh start for the series at first glance, according to lead actress Deborah Ann Woll, the project was actually part of a much older plan.
God of War Laufey Has Been in Planning for a Long Time
Deborah Ann Woll stated that she had known about God of War Laufey for almost 10 years. She said that the project’s eventual announcement was a great relief for her, as keeping such a big secret for so long was not easy. According to Woll, Santa Monica Studio had long considered Laufey not just as an afterthought, but as a character with a special place in the future of the series.
Woll revealed that even when he met with creative director Cory Barlog regarding the God of War Ragnarök process, there were already visuals from God of War Laufey in the office. These visuals even featured Faye alongside Phranque, the new companion who generated great anticipation during the trailer. This detail shows that the game’s core concepts were already taking shape in 2018.
The Phranque character has already become a topic of conversation among players. The consciously gelatinous cube seen in the trailer initially appeared as a humorous side character. However, according to Woll, Phranque isn’t just a joke; he’s a figure deeply connected to the game’s mythology. This suggests that Santa Monica Studio will experiment with both surprising and lore-significant ideas in the new game.
The release date for God of War Laufey is not yet confirmed, but recent promotional messages from Sony reinforce the idea that the game might be closer than expected. This new era, focusing on Faye after Kratos, could bring a more emotional, mysterious, and different dimension to the series. Most importantly, it is now clearer than ever that this is not a random side project, but a grand plan that has been in place for years.
