Hitman Series’ 25th Anniversary Message

The legendary stealth series Hitman is celebrating its 25th anniversary. First released in 1999, Hitman: Codename 47 revolutionized the gaming world by giving players the freedom to achieve their goals in a variety of ways. IO Interactive veterans shared the series’ evolution over the years and Agent 47’s enduring impact in an exclusive interview.

How Has the Hitman Series Evolved Over 25 Years?

Jacob Mikkelsen, one of IO Interactive’s legendary designers, stated that the series has always maintained its philosophy of “intelligence-based, free-form assassination design.” He stated that despite the limited technology in the early games, the ideas shaped by Hitman: Contracts remain at the heart of the series. He stated that this vision has been fully realized today with Hitman: World of Assassination.

Hitman Series' 25th Anniversary Message

Creative director Christian Elverdam emphasized that the Hitman: Absolution era, in particular, was a significant step toward modernizing gameplay. He stated that the mistakes made during that era inspired subsequent games. Despite receiving criticism, Absolution laid a solid foundation for the modern Hitman trilogy, built on the foundation of “player freedom.”

Elverdam also explained that the idea of Contracts Mode, which prioritized player creativity, was born during this period. This mode, which allowed players to create and share their own assassination scenarios, increased community interaction and transformed the series into a “living experience.” This idea later evolved into a truly “living game” system with Hitman (2016).

Finally, it’s safe to say that IO Interactive’s “Hitman: World of Assassination” has achieved a point where the series has evolved while maintaining its unique identity. The development team stated that new Elusive Target content is on the way and that the Hitman universe will live on despite the 007: First Light project. It looks like Agent 47’s assassination story will continue for many years to come.
