However, one detail that puzzled scientists for years was the almost complete absence of Neanderthal genes on the X chromosome. These gaps were called “Neanderthal deserts.”
Why is the Neanderthal X Chromosome Missing?
For a long time, natural selection was cited as the reason for this deficiency. That is, it was thought that Neanderthal X chromosome genes were harmful and were eliminated over time. However, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania have raised a different possibility: the problem may be more related to mating behavior than biology.
According to a new study, interbreeding between modern humans and Neanderthals may have largely occurred between Neanderthal men and modern human women. This directly affects genetic distribution due to the way the X chromosome is inherited. Women have two X chromosomes, while men carry one X and one Y chromosome.
If Neanderthal men fathered children with modern human women, daughters inherited a Neanderthal X chromosome, while sons inherited only their mother’s X chromosome. This could lead to a decrease in Neanderthal X DNA in the modern human population over generations.
The researchers also looked at the opposite scenario. They found that Neanderthal genomes contained 62 percent more modern human X chromosome DNA compared to other chromosomes. This “mirror effect” reinforces the idea that mating orientation, rather than genetic incompatibility, was the determining factor.
This finding shows that evolution is shaped not only by the struggle for survival but also by social interactions and relationships. Encounters that occurred tens of thousands of years ago continue to leave traces in our genes today. Human history can be read not only as a story of competition, but also as a story of contact and connection.
