In Bluepoint’s God of War Game, Atreus was Going to Fall to Hades
Sony’s announcement last year that it was canceling two live service projects was already noteworthy. One of them was a God of War-themed title developed by Bluepoint Games. The fact that the series primarily offers a single-player experience and Bluepoint is more known for remake projects made this choice questionable from the start. The studio’s subsequent complete closure made the situation even more dramatic.
The God of War Project Was to Fell to Hades
According to a report by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, the canceled project centered on Atreus. The story outline envisioned a scenario where the character falls to Hades in Greek mythology, and players control different versions of Atreus in this dark world. Co-op elements were considered for the game, but it was noted that much of the design was constantly changing.
Bluepoint’s inexperience in live service development complicated the process. According to the report, some team members expressed a desire to create a traditional action game similar to Demon’s Souls or God of War Ragnarok. Although Sony Santa Monica Studio reportedly supported the project, it didn’t reach its desired destination and was ultimately canceled.
Following the cancellation, Bluepoint reportedly submitted projects such as a Bloodborne Remake and a new version of Shadow of the Colossus, but these also failed to gain approval. As a last resort, a Ghost of Tsushima spin-off idea was also considered, but this too was not greenlit.
A God of War adventure of Atreus in Hades sounded like a bold idea, but the project was shelved before it could be realized. With Bluepoint’s closure, this alternative interpretation of God of War remains one of the “what ifs” in the industry.
