id Software was Preparing Perfect Dark Before the Layoffs
It has been claimed that id Software prepared a project presentation to revive the Perfect Dark series before widespread layoffs began. The studio, which completed the Revelations expansion for DOOM: The Dark Ages, is said to have been trying to determine its new project and presented various game ideas to Xbox management. One of these is reportedly a fresh start for the long-neglected Perfect Dark franchise.

According to the claims, id Software presented a total of four different game ideas to Xbox for consideration. These included an original title called Fury, a survival game codenamed Ironwood, a new cooperative DOOM project, and a Perfect Dark reboot. It is stated that a presentation file and concept art were prepared for Perfect Dark, but no detailed information about the gameplay structure or story of the project was shared.
It’s unclear how different the proposed Perfect Dark concept is from the previously canceled reboot project. Given id Software’s experience with fast-paced combat systems and first-person shooter games, it’s speculated that the series might take on a more action-oriented structure. However, since there’s no confirmed gameplay footage or official announcement, the studio’s approach to the brand remains unclear for now.
Other presentations suggest Fury is designed as a game combining film noir and cyberpunk elements, with combat reminiscent of the John Wick films. Ironwood is described as a survival experience set in a Wild West world filled with robots. The fourth concept is said to be a cooperative DOOM game where players can fight together.
However, it’s reported that more than half of the studio’s employees have been laid off, making the future of these projects highly uncertain. Whether the Perfect Dark presentation will be reconsidered remains unknown. While it’s debatable whether id Software can develop a new, large-scale game with its current staff, the Perfect Dark project currently appears to be only a draft concept.
