Is this the End of the Need for Speed Series?
Need for Speed is once again facing an uncertain future following recent announcements from Electronic Arts. The news that Criterion Games, the series’ developer, is redirecting all its resources to a different project has worried players expecting a new racing game announcement soon. While Electronic Arts hasn’t officially announced the end of the series, the studio’s current work schedule suggests the brand may remain silent for a long time.
Need for Speed Could Be Affected by Criterion’s New Focus
Rebecka Coutaz, Vice President and General Manager of EA Battlefield Studios Europe, was asked whether Criterion Games would return to developing other projects in the future. Coutaz gave a very clear answer, stating that the studio is solely focused on Battlefield. She made no comment about possible projects that could be prepared for Need for Speed’s anniversary.
The fact that Criterion Games’ official announcement now uses the phrase “A Battlefield Studio” clearly reveals the company’s current direction. The studio previously supported the development of the Battlefield series, but the new announcement suggests this role isn’t temporary. Criterion’s complete focus on Battlefield could directly impact the development of a new Need for Speed game.
The biggest concern among players is that Electronic Arts will put the series on hold for years before officially shutting it down. Games like Underground, Underground 2, Most Wanted, and Carbon are still considered among the most beloved titles in the series. A significant portion of fans want the street racing atmosphere and vehicle customization systems from the brand’s successful era to be revived.
The last main game in the series, Need for Speed Unbound, divided players with its comic book-style visual effects, dialogue, and driving mechanics. The lack of a new project announcement after this mixed reception has further fueled concerns. Electronic Arts hasn’t confirmed that Need for Speed is completely over, but given Criterion’s current priorities, a return of the series in the near future is currently considered unlikely.
