Isn’t HoverGrease 2 a Bit Too Weird?

We’re used to seeing strange ideas in the independent game world, but HoverGrease 2 stands apart. Designed as a top-down hero shooter, the game is set to offer both a story mode and competitive multiplayer options. While this structure sounds quite interesting on paper, the visual style and character designs have created a significant “what is this now?” effect among players.

HoverGrease 2 will offer players 10 different playable characters. Each character will have 18 different weapon or attack options, promising significant variety in gameplay. Moreover, in addition to the single-player story mode, the game will also feature online competitive modes, a battle pass, and unlockable cosmetic content. In short, the development team seems to be trying to create a game that will be playable for a long time, not just a small and experimental project.

However, the game’s main talking point wasn’t its mechanics, but its visual identity. The developers describe the world as “bio-cyberpunk,” meaning a science fiction atmosphere combined with bizarre mutant characters. A man with a chicken head, human-rabbit hybrids, horse-like figures, and more are featured in the game. While the concept might seem creative, the realistic visual style makes these characters unsettling for some players.

Another reason for the backlash is the sexualization of the character designs. The fact that most female characters are designed in very revealing clothing, especially combined with animalistic and mutant details, seems extremely strange to some players. Many people on social media and in the comments section of the trailer question whether the game is a joke or a serious project.

All these oddities may have actually increased the game’s visibility. HoverGrease 2 is confusing even in its name; it’s unclear why it’s a “2” when there’s no known first game. The game is scheduled for release on May 22, 2026. With its strange, unsettling, and intriguing nature, HoverGrease 2 looks set to be one of those indie games that makes you think, “I need to see this.”
