Jack Emmert has Returned to Cryptic Studios

Cryptic Studios, a long-established studio in the MMO world, is making headlines with a surprising comeback. Jack Emmert, one of the studio’s founders and former CEO, has returned to lead Cryptic Studios after many years. Emmert’s return is seen as a promising development for both the studio’s long-running online games and potential new projects.

Cryptic Studios Enters a New Era with Jack Emmert

Jack Emmert founded Cryptic Studios in 1999 and served as CEO from 2011–2016. During this period, the studio created long-running MMOs such as Star Trek Online, Neverwinter, and Champions Online. Emmert’s return has generated considerable excitement within the gaming community, particularly regarding the future of these games.

The studio had gone through a difficult period in recent years. Downsizing within the Embracer Group, staff losses, and the temporary transfer of games to DECA Games created the perception that Cryptic was “just trying to survive.” However, the management buyout under the Arc Games umbrella paved the way for the studio to operate independently again.

In his statements during the return process, Emmert specifically emphasized that he is not an executive who came to gradually shut down Cryptic. On the contrary, he aims for the studio to grow in the coming years, strengthen its live service games, and even bring entirely new projects to life. This approach shows that Cryptic wants to be remembered not only for its past successes but also for what it will produce in the future.

Another goal of the new CEO is to bring back former Cryptic employees to the team. According to Emmert, the current team consists of a balanced mix of experienced developers and new faces. While maintaining this structure, bringing back those who have contributed to the studio in the past is seen as one of the important steps that will strengthen Cryptic’s identity.
