Larian’s writing process drew criticism

Larian had become one of the most acclaimed studios in the gaming world after Baldur’s Gate 3, but recently the studio has been making headlines, this time due to controversy. Larian’s writing process has come under scrutiny and criticism from many writers in the industry, who have shared their experiences on social media.

Larian’s Writing Tests Criticized

Game writer Bruno Dias stated that Larian’s hiring process has been a long-standing problem in the industry, saying that candidates are subjected to “incredibly long and free” writing tests. According to Dias, this process isn’t limited to hours-long tests; it also wears down candidates with months-long waiting periods for feedback. This situation has reportedly become an “open secret” within the industry.

Other developers have shared similar experiences. Game developer Gwen C. Katz revealed that she had 12 separate interviews with Larian but was ultimately rejected solely on the basis of her resume. Katz’s account brought the complexity of the process and the psychological pressure on candidates back into the spotlight.

In an anonymous application reported by Aftermath a few months ago, a candidate stated that the writing test they were required to take was much longer than the studio had indicated. While acknowledging that other studios use similar methods, the same candidate specifically emphasized that Larian was the “worst example” in this regard.

Zoë Quinn and Stella Sacco also joined the discussion. Quinn stated that she refused to work with Larian because she was asked to take a free writing test, while Sacco explained that the content she was required to submit had to be playable. Sacco also expressed serious security concerns about the studio not being clearly defined from the outset. These statements suggest that Larian’s hiring policies will be discussed further in the coming period.
