Legacy of Atlantis Difficulty Level will be Adjusted for Modern Players
As the legendary series prepares to return with its new game, new details shared about Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis have brought the balance between veteran and new players back into the spotlight. During a Q&A session with the Crystal Dynamics team, it became clear that the game’s difficulty level will not remain strictly tied to the brutal nature of the 1996 version, but will be re-evaluated to better suit modern player habits.
How Will the Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis Difficulty System Change?
The development team emphasizes that Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis will still be based on puzzles, exploration, combat, and Lara Croft’s struggle for survival. Giant rock traps, sudden dangers, and classic Tomb Raider moments will be present; however, it’s implied that these won’t be in a way that constantly kills the player in a single blow. This approach aims to provide a more fluid and learnable experience.
According to Crystal Dynamics, the most important part of reinterpreting a game is considering the expectations of players of the time. Many players today prefer fairer systems where they can redeem themselves for mistakes, rather than dying repeatedly through trial and error. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Legacy of Atlantis will soften the harsh punishments of the old games.
On the other hand, this raises questions for die-hard fans of the series. One of the most memorable aspects of the original Tomb Raider games was the intense tension felt while navigating deadly traps. Completely eliminating these elements might weaken the spirit of the experience for some players. The development team states that they are trying to maintain the sense of danger to avoid completely losing this balance.
At this stage, it seems that Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis will be neither completely brutal nor overly easy. The aim is to combine Lara Croft’s dangerous world with modern control systems and more forgiving mechanics. How well this balance is achieved upon release will be a determining factor for both veteran fans and new players.
