Metro 2039 Will Offer Fan-Favorite Features From Day One

4A Games continues to share new details about Metro 2039, the sequel to Metro Exodus. Scheduled for release in early 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, the game will feature a new character, Stranger, whom players will control. Returning from exile to the Moscow Metro, Stranger will fight against the Novoreich regime and its leader, Hunter, while the series’ hidden Karma system will once again follow players’ decisions.

Metro 2039 Brings Back the Karma System with a Different Approach

Metro 2039 executive producer Jon Bloch confirmed that the beloved Karma system will be present in the new game. As in previous games, players’ actions will lead to various consequences later in the story. However, the team wants to approach moral choices in a different way this time, stating that the system has been redesigned to directly serve the new story.

Previous Metro games generally employed a more gray morality, not easily classifying players as good or bad. Metro 2039, however, will reduce this ambiguity by centering on the fascist Novoreich regime. 4A Games says the story will more explicitly address the consequences of war and the devastation wrought by the oppressive regime. Therefore, the line between right and wrong will be clearer than in previous games.

The core logic of the karma system remains. In Metro 2033, Last Light, and Exodus, some small choices made by players affected unseen points, the consequences of which usually became apparent later in the game or at the finale. Metro 2039 will similarly see consequences for decisions later on, but exactly how the system will be demonstrated in gameplay has not yet been revealed.

The new game will also bring back stealth, limited resources, weapon customization, and familiar enemies from the series. In a story where Stranger will struggle with both the Novoreich forces and his own past, the karma system is expected to create harsher decisions. The exact release date for Metro 2039 has not yet been confirmed, but according to current information, the game is planned to be released in early 2027.
