Microsoft is Quietly Dismantling its “This is an Xbox” Campaign
Microsoft’s “This is an Xbox” marketing campaign, launched in 2024, aimed to emphasize that the Xbox brand was more than just a console. This approach, which suggested that many devices, from televisions to phones, could offer the Xbox experience, was met with mixed reactions among gamers. Now, a notable development has occurred regarding this campaign on the Xbox front.
“This is an Xbox” Campaign is Being Quietly Removed
According to changes noticed by gamers in recent days, Microsoft has begun removing content related to the “This is an Xbox” campaign from the internet. Some blog posts and pages related to the campaign are no longer accessible, and most of the related links are giving 404 errors.
Launched in 2024, the campaign aimed to position the Xbox brand as more than just a device, but a platform and ecosystem. Microsoft sought to emphasize that gaming on televisions, phones, VR devices, and cloud services was also part of the Xbox experience.
However, this approach didn’t have the expected impact on gamers. Many players mocked the campaign on social media, depicting everyday objects as “Xboxes.” This gradually transformed the campaign from a serious marketing message into a subject of internet jokes.
The campaign’s removal came after changes in Xbox management. Following Phil Spencer’s retirement and Asha Sharma’s appointment as head of Microsoft Gaming, there’s speculation about potential changes to the company’s marketing strategy.
Despite this, Microsoft’s core vision remains unchanged. In presentations at GDC 2026, the Xbox team emphasized that the gaming experience would become more unified across PCs, consoles, cloud, and mobile devices. They also highlighted Project Helix, a next-generation Xbox hardware development tool designed for developers, as a key component of this multi-platform strategy.
