Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance Will Bring Back an Old Nightmare

Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance brings back Khezu, considered one of the most disturbing creatures in the Monster Hunter series. Revealed at Capcom’s special show at Tokyo Game Show, the creature retains its core characteristics from previous games while appearing even more terrifying thanks to Wilds’ more detailed visuals. For players who only started the series with Monster Hunter World, Khezu will be a very different experience.

Khezu Returns with Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance

Khezu is easily distinguishable from other creatures in the series by its white, rubbery skin, almost completely lost eyes, and enormous mouth full of teeth. Nearly blind, the beast tracks its prey largely by its sense of smell. Its extendable neck and tail also allow it to attack from unexpected distances during combat.

The gameplay shown depicts Khezu emerging from a cave, striking Alpha Araketa with its long neck. Its electrically-based attacks can paralyze opponents, creating opportunities for players to retaliate. Familiar turns and body attacks from previous games are also retained.

The monster’s ability to cling to ceilings also returns. Using its short tail like a suction cup, Khezu can attach itself to rocks and unleash electrical attacks from there. The most striking moment in the new footage is the attack where the creature attempts to grab and pull the player into its massive mouth. This move creates an even more unsettling visual than previous versions of Khezu.

Khezu’s signature silent music is also retained. The absence of a normal theme during combat, with only environmental and creature sounds, makes the encounter more tense. Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance thus not only brings back an old monster but also presents it in its most terrifying form yet.
