Mike Flanagan has Renewed Hopes for The Dark Tower Series
The Dark Tower is considered one of the most challenging Stephen King adaptations. Mike Flanagan has been working to bring this vast universe to television since December 2022. Despite the years that have passed, the project is still not shelved. Moreover, while Flanagan acknowledges the slow pace of development, he specifically emphasizes that the series is constantly in motion.
The Dark Tower Still Among Mike Flanagan’s Priorities
According to Flanagan, the main problem is that realizing a project as large as The Dark Tower on the scale he desires requires significant studio support. The director says that he developed the project for about a year and a half during his time at Netflix, and that the move to Amazon created new complexities instead of simplifying the process.
One of the main reasons for this is that the character rights in the Stephen King universe are spread across different studios. Because The Dark Tower has numerous connections to King’s other works, the rights aspect of the adaptation becomes far more complex than a typical project. This is why Flanagan describes the development process as moving “at the speed of an oil tanker.”
However, the director hasn’t given up on the project. In fact, the success of his eight-episode Carrie series for Prime Video could be one of the projects that could pave the way for The Dark Tower. Flanagan says that it’s not entirely impossible for some characters or ideas from Carrie to connect to the wider Stephen King universe in the future. Characters like Abra Stone from Doctor Sleep and Danny Torrance from The Shining are among those he has in mind for these connections.
The Dark Tower’s journey to the screen began with the 2017 film starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, but it didn’t receive the expected response. Flanagan, however, wants to adapt a much larger story spanning eight main novels. The Dark Tower series hasn’t officially entered production yet, but Flanagan’s continued involvement with the project over the years keeps the possibility of a return to screens alive.
