The Hyperkin SupaBoy, Which Plays Real SNES Cartridges, has been Introduced
Retro gaming devices have largely relied on emulation and digital game archives in recent years. The Hyperkin SupaBoy, however, takes a slightly more old-school approach. Instead of ROM files, the device uses real Super Nintendo and Super Famicom cartridges, specifically targeting players who still own physical game collections.
Hyperkin SupaBoy Supports Real SNES Cartridges
The new SupaBoy model can run real Super Nintendo and Super Famicom cartridges from PAL, NTSC, and Japan regions. The cartridge is inserted directly into the back of the device, and by design, a large portion of the cartridge remains outside. While the appearance is somewhat strange, this choice can be considered a nice detail that preserves the feel of the old console.
The device’s body is designed to resemble a classic SNES controller. The front features ports for connecting original controllers. It also supports some older accessories like the SNES Mouse. This means the SupaBoy isn’t just a handheld device; it offers a closer experience to the classic two-player SNES experience.
The screen features a 4.3-inch IPS panel. Hyperkin describes the screen as a “premium” panel with a wide viewing angle. Additionally, the device can connect to a compatible television via its AV output. This means users can use the SupaBoy as a direct-to-TV SNES alternative instead of a portable console.
The Hyperkin SupaBoy is available for pre-order in two new color options: Crimson and translucent Prime. The recommended retail price is $129.99 in the US, €129.90 in Europe, and £119.99 in the UK. The device is scheduled to go on sale on October 28, 2026. While it’s a rather niche product for those who still keep their own SNES cartridges, the idea of inserting and playing with the actual cartridge is what sets the SupaBoy apart from standard retro handheld consoles.
