Zack Snyder has Found a New Snake Plissken for Escape From New York
Escape From New York, a reinterpretation of John Carpenter’s 1981 cult film, continues to take shape under the direction of Zack Snyder. The director both explained how he plans to approach the story’s era and confirmed that he has an actor in mind for the role of Snake Plissken. However, Snyder is choosing not to reveal the name for now.
New Snake Plissken Ready for Escape From New York
According to Snyder, the new film will be set in 1997, but this future will be conceived through the eyes of 1981. In other words, instead of directly using modern technology, the production will preserve how people in the original film’s era might have imagined the future. Through this approach, the director aims to avoid losing the unique kitsch and camp atmosphere of the first film.
The new adaptation also features a specific date chosen for the beginning of the major conflict between the US police force and criminal gangs. Snyder says he placed these events on July 9, 1981, the release date of the original Escape From New York. The director also states that the story will retain a satirical element that can connect to the present day through issues such as government intervention and authority.
Regarding Snake Plissken, the most anticipated topic is the casting. Snyder confirmed that he has a specific name in mind for the role, but did not say whether it was an actor he had worked with before. He also revealed that Jeffrey Dean Morgan had contacted him about the role, and specifically emphasized that the character’s iconic eye patch would definitely be retained. According to Snyder, the new Snake needs to truly reflect the character in terms of appearance as well.
Escape From New York is one of those projects that has been attempted to be remade for years but has never quite come to fruition. In the past, names like Gerard Butler were considered for the lead role, and different directors were involved in the project. This time, in Snyder’s hands, Escape From New York could take shape as a dirtier, more physical film with a focus on practical effects. The identity of the new Snake Plissken remains the biggest secret of the project for now.
