NVIDIA DLSS 5 was Leaked Even Before its Release, but…

NVIDIA’s DLSS 5, announced this year, uses a new Neural Rendering approach that goes beyond classic upscaling and frame generation technologies. The system can re-render elements such as lighting, materials, skin, and hair in real time. However, with an unfinished version leaking online, mod developers have begun testing the technology in games that don’t have official support.

DLSS 5 Already Added to Games Like Control and Cyberpunk 2077

The leak reportedly came from an NVIDIA library called “DLSSNR” found in the PC version of NBA 2K27. Mod developers in the RenoDX community quickly managed to run the file, and one of the first tests was done on Control. Subsequently, DLSS 5 began being tested in games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and The Last of Us Part 2.

The results are quite mixed. While some scenes show more detailed skin, clothing, and lighting, other instances reveal character faces that deviate significantly from the original design. Comparisons, particularly with Cloud and Ellie, demonstrate that the technology not only improves the visuals but also alters the developer’s original artwork.

The performance side isn’t very encouraging either for now. A test conducted on Control with an RTX 5070 Ti reportedly showed a drop from approximately 71 FPS to 35 FPS at 4K resolution. However, it’s important to remember that these results don’t represent the final version. The current build is both incomplete and being forcibly applied to games that don’t have official support.

The leaked version currently appears to be limited to RTX 50 series graphics cards, but this doesn’t definitively indicate final hardware support. NVIDIA plans to officially release DLSS 5 in the fall. For now, the picture that emerges suggests the technology can deliver truly impressive results, but raises serious questions about character design and performance cost.
