One of Mario’s Core Mechanics was Actually a Bug
Mario games have undergone significant changes over 40 years, but some movements have remained virtually unchanged since the series’ inception. Jumping, growing with mushrooms, and gaining firepower with flowers are now integral parts of the character. It turns out another fundamental mechanic that players take for granted wasn’t a clever idea Nintendo planned from the start.
What Mechanic in Mario Games Was Born From a Bug?
According to Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario’s ability to run across small gaps was actually a programming error. While developing Super Mario Bros., when the character encountered a gap the width of one block, instead of falling, he maintained his speed and crossed to the other side. The programmer noticed this and was preparing to fix the problem with ground contact detection.
Miyamoto, however, wanted the bug left as it was, believing it made the gameplay more fun. Thus, by pressing the B key, Mario could accelerate and run through narrow gaps, briefly defying gravity. This small glitch later became a permanent feature in the series’ 2D games, extending into Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
This wasn’t the only bug that proved useful during development. Floating coins gave the team the idea for hidden blocks. The reason World 2-3 in the first game was built on high platforms was to allow Cheep Cheeps to jump from below and attack the player. In short, many details considered classics in the series today were shaped through trial and error.
Miyamoto specifically emphasizes that all these ideas didn’t originate from a single person. He explains that the Cheep Cheep idea came from a young developer, and that small bugs were transformed into real mechanics through the right decisions within the team. Clearly, Mario’s success stems not only from flawless designs but also from bugs that were recognized in time and shouldn’t have been fixed.
