Project Mara was Cancelled in Favor of Senua
Senua has once again become central to the gaming world with a surprise announcement during the Xbox Games Showcase. While Ninja Theory announced a new game set in the Hellblade universe, the status of the studio’s long-dormant project, Project Mara, also became a subject of speculation. The new announcement regarding the project, which was announced in 2020 and attracted attention with its experimental horror narrative, is disappointing for fans: Project Mara is no longer in active development.
Instead of Project Mara, the Entire Team Focuses on Senua
Ninja Theory studio head Dom Matthews confirmed in a statement on Xbox Wire that Project Mara has been canceled and the team is now entirely focused on a new Senua game. This decision shows that the studio wants to consolidate its resources into one large project. The new game will be set in the Hellblade universe, but it will not be a direct sequel to the last game. However, it was stated that the events will take place after Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2.
Project Mara, when first announced, was considered one of Ninja Theory’s most interesting projects. Planned as an experimental horror game, it aimed to experiment with new methods of storytelling. The studio particularly wanted to take the project to a different level with its realistic atmosphere, psychological tension, and the idea of offering a more personal experience to the player. However, the weight of the Hellblade series within the studio caused Project Mara to be sidelined for a long time. Therefore, while the cancellation decision may seem surprising, it can actually be considered a long-awaited development. In recent years, Ninja Theory has largely focused on the Senua character and the Hellblade universe. The newly announced Senua game is said to be closer to the action genre, and the studio will be directing all its creative energy to this project. This makes it clearer why Project Mara could no longer be continued.
The new Senua game is planned for release in 2027 and is expected to be available on all platforms, including PlayStation 5. While the shelving of Project Mara is sad news for players interested in the experimental horror genre, Ninja Theory’s focus on a single project with its entire team seems promising in terms of the scope of the new game. The studio is preparing to expand the Hellblade universe with a different kind of action experience this time.
