SharpEmu Could Render PlayStation’s PC Plans Meaningless
While Sony plans to keep its major single-player titles, excluding live service games, exclusive to PlayStation consoles, a new emulator project called SharpEmu could affect this strategy in the long run. Still in the very early stages of development, the software aims to run current-generation PlayStation 5 games on PC. Although initial tests have yielded limited results, the team has already made significant technical strides in some games.
SharpEmu Aims to Run PS5 Games on PC
The SharpEmu team has so far tested Dreaming Sarah, Silent Hill: The Short Message, Poppy Playtime Chapter 1, and the Demon’s Souls remake. While some games crashed during startup, they managed to render 2D textures on the screen for Dreaming Sarah. The project, in its current state, cannot run the games flawlessly, but the results show that the basic emulation infrastructure is starting to work.
In Demon’s Souls, the game entered a continuously repeating image loop after reaching the first video frame. According to the developer, the game continues to transfer data in the background and there are no crashes. However, because the AGC shader translation and image processing system are not yet complete, a playable image cannot be presented. SharpEmu has a long and complex development process ahead.
Similar progress was previously seen with the Bloodborne PS4 emulation. The game quickly transitioned from a black screen to playable sections, and subsequent updates and community mods improved it to support 4K resolution and 60 FPS. It’s not guaranteed that Demon’s Souls will achieve the same speed, but if SharpEmu progresses, it could pave the way for more PlayStation 5 exclusive games to run on PC.
The project is stated to be open source and non-commercial. The developers say they are researching the system architecture and reverse engineering without using proprietary PlayStation code. While developing an emulator doesn’t automatically mean distributing pirated games, it’s still unknown how Sony will approach the project. If SharpEmu proves successful, the effectiveness of PlayStation’s strategy to keep games exclusive to the console may diminish over time.
