Sony Backtracks on its PC Strategy

One of the biggest changes Sony has seen in recent years is the release of PlayStation games on PC. For many players, this was seen as Sony’s move to reach a wider audience. However, recent developments suggest that this strategy is slowly being reversed and the company is returning to its “console-focused” approach.

Sony Returns to Exclusive Games

The changes Sony has made to its official PlayStation Studios pages are small but quite significant. The PC emphasis that was previously present in some studio announcements has been removed. Instead, the text highlights experiences and “exclusive” projects specifically for PlayStation players. This is an important detail indicating that the company is quietly changing direction.

For example, Valkyrie Entertainment, one of the support studios, no longer mentions the PC platform in its statements. Similarly, a major studio like XDev now explicitly defines its focus as PlayStation exclusive projects. These changes may seem small on their own, but when combined, they paint a very clear picture.

In fact, there are logical reasons behind this decision. While some of Sony’s big games released on PC have garnered interest, the overall picture isn’t as strong as expected. According to reports, the company’s PC revenue has remained around $300 million over the past few years. This figure is quite low compared to PlayStation’s earnings. So, from the company’s perspective, the fact that exclusive games are still more profitable outweighs the negatives.

Then there’s the brand aspect. PlayStation has been a platform that has stood out for years with its “exclusive games.” The strength of titles like God of War, The Last of Us, or Spider-Man comes partly from this. Therefore, Sony’s return to this identity isn’t really surprising. Because exclusive games are one of the biggest factors directly influencing not only sales but also console preferences.

Of course, this doesn’t mean the PC door is completely closing. Sony will probably continue to bring some of its games to PC, albeit with delays. However, it seems that the priorities are shifting. In other words, PC is becoming less of a primary platform and more of a secondary revenue stream.
