Sony has canceled Olivia Wilde’s Spider-Woman movie

Sony Pictures’ plans for the Spider-Man spin-off universe continue to be shelved one by one. Most recently, Olivia Wilde’s Spider-Woman film, which she both developed and directed, has been canceled. The decision is said to have been made after Kraven the Hunter’s major box office and critical disappointment.

Why Was Spider-Woman Shelved?

According to industry sources, Sony decided to pause all Spider-Man spin-off projects after the failure of Kraven the Hunter. During this process, Olivia Wilde’s Spider-Woman film was completely canceled. Actually, this decision hasn’t caused a huge shock among fans. Because in the comics, Jessica Drew’s story largely intertwines with S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers; this reinforces the view that the character would feel more natural under the Marvel Studios umbrella.

According to leaked information, Sony is now more flexible with Marvel Studios regarding character sharing compared to the past. The studio, which previously didn’t even allow Kraven to be used in Black Panther, seems to have backed down from its rigid stance, as seen in the case of Venom. This increases the likelihood of characters like Venom, Black Cat, and Silver Sable appearing in the MCU.

In 2020, Olivia Wilde described the Spider-Woman project as “a superhero story reframed from a female perspective.” However, at this point, it seems unlikely that this vision will come to fruition under Sony.

In short, while the Spider-Woman film has been canceled, this doesn’t necessarily mean the character is completely shelved. Sony’s reversal could pave the way for Jessica Drew to appear in a different form in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future. The fans’ main question now is: Which Marvel characters owned by Sony will reach their true potential in the MCU?
