Sony Wants to Popularize PS5 Low Power Mode

While Sony isn’t quite finished with the PlayStation 5, some steps suggest the company is also preparing for the next generation. While the recently added low power mode to the PS5 may seem like an environmentally friendly move at first glance, rumors behind the scenes suggest this feature may be part of a much larger plan. In particular, messages allegedly sent to developers suggest Sony is taking this mode more seriously than expected.

PS5 Low Power Mode Could Be a Foreshadowing for the PS6

According to Moore’s Law Is Dead, a well-known leaker, Sony wants games to actively support the PS5’s low power mode. Some developers have reportedly received emails from Sony containing specific instructions and technical explanations for implementing this mode “correctly.” The most striking point here is that the company is asking developers to lower the resolution but not abandon the 60 FPS target.

This approach aligns strongly with the long-rumored PlayStation 6 handheld. If the PS6 does indeed launch alongside a desktop console, stable and smooth performance at low resolutions will be a priority. Easing developers into this idea on the PS5 represents a safe transition for Sony.

An anonymous developer speaking to MLID hinted that Sony was frustrated by the less support it had received. The fact that most developers simply ignored low-power mode may have prompted Sony to accelerate its plans. It wouldn’t be surprising if it became mandatory in the future, especially if a portable PS6 is targeted.

Officially, Sony still promotes low-power mode as an environmentally friendly feature and emphasizes its carbon footprint. However, this intense behind-the-scenes guidance suggests that the PS5 is actually being used as a sounding board for the PS6 era. While there’s no confirmed PS6 yet, this insistence on low-power mode clearly suggests that the next generation is taking shape sooner than expected.
