Square Enix is working on a Black Mages animated series
Square Enix is preparing to expand the Final Fantasy IX universe, this time through animation. The project, announced years ago but whose fate was questioned due to uncertainties in the production process, seems to have been revived. Recent information indicates that an animated film centered on the legacy of the Black Mages is actively being planned.
What Will the Black Mages Animated Film Be About?
According to the information that has emerged, the project focuses on the legacy of Vivi, one of the iconic characters from Final Fantasy IX. The story revolves around Vivi’s children, Mel, Kolm, and the other young Black Mages. Their peaceful life in Alexandria is disrupted by a mysterious event, and the dark traces of the past resurface.
The animated series is planned to adopt a narrative style aimed at children. Consisting of approximately 22-minute episodes, the production aims for a total of 13 episodes. In this respect, the project is positioned as an expansion adapting the theme of Final Fantasy IX to a younger audience.
It is stated that Square Enix is not directly at the center of the production side of the project. The animated series, progressing with new production partners, is being reshaped under a different umbrella after the cancellation of an initial attempt. This indicates that the project is proceeding independently of the game’s plans.
Especially in recent years, with the rumors of a Final Fantasy IX remake, this animated series has also been frequently mentioned. However, current information reveals that the animation project is not directly connected to a possible remake. In other words, the Black Mages animated series is not seen as a harbinger of a major announcement on the game side.
Square Enix continues to keep the Final Fantasy IX universe alive in a different format. This Black Mages-focused animated series aims to open a new narrative avenue while preserving the nostalgic spirit of the series. While the project is expected to be released around 2028, it stands out as an important step for Final Fantasy fans, reminding them that the universe is still alive.
