Steam Controller 2 Leaked
Valve is preparing to bring back the Steam Controller series after years away. Following the original model, which debuted ten years ago and was quickly discontinued, the first details of the company’s Steam Controller 2 have leaked. According to reliable sources, the device will feature a new design inspired by the Steam Deck, and its unveiling will be very soon.
The New Steam Controller Draws Inspiration from the Steam Deck
Brad Lynch, a source close to Valve, has shared important information about the new Steam Controller 2. According to Lynch, the controller stands out with its dual analog sticks, a centrally located Steam button, and dual touchpads. These features confirm that the device is directly influenced by the Steam Deck architecture. Lynch noted that the shared image is merely an AI-generated representation of a prototype, emphasizing that the actual device will have a much more ergonomic design.
The new controller’s most intriguing innovation will be its capacitive sensor technology, known as “capsense.” This system can detect how close a player’s hands are to the device’s grips. While it doesn’t offer full finger tracking, it does make the device’s motion sensors and gyroscope more sensitive. This technology was also used in the recently updated Steam Deck model.
Lynch stated that Valve is “very close” to unveiling the new device, and suggested that the Steam Controller 2 could be announced at the same event as the company’s wireless VR headset, the Steam Frame. This suggests that Valve is planning multiple hardware launches by the end of 2025.
The original Steam Controller was discontinued in 2019, and the device was only available to a limited audience. However, the success of the Steam Deck appears to have re-energized Valve’s hardware efforts. If the leaks are accurate, the Steam Controller 2 is expected to be released before the end of 2025, making it one of the most talked-about gaming accessories of the year.
