The Last of Us 2 is Getting a Multiplayer Mode
The Last of Us 2 made a big splash with its powerful story upon release, but many players still have a small lingering regret: a Factions-style multiplayer mode never arrived. Naughty Dog had worked on a new multiplayer experience for The Last of Us Part 2, but the project was later canceled. It was even rumored that The Last of Us Online was shelved shortly before its announcement. Now, however, there’s an interesting development that could fill this void, albeit unofficially.
The Last of Us 2 Multiplayer Mod Coming to PC
The YouTube channel Speclizer shared approximately 25 minutes of new gameplay footage for The Last of Us 2 Multiplayer Mod. Looking at the video, the mod appears to be much more advanced than expected. Menu integration, character equipment, map usage, and the overall gameplay structure truly feel like a mod planned to be included in the game. For those who miss Factions, this footage is quite exciting.
According to the mod’s description, the targeted release date is September 2026. However, the bad news is: this content is being developed exclusively for PC. PlayStation users are not expected to have access to this mod. So, there’s a nice surprise for those who played The Last of Us 2 on PC, but it seems console players will be left out again.
The shared images show that the multiplayer section is integrated quite naturally into the main game menu. The mod will utilize familiar areas, weapons, and equipment from The Last of Us 2. This could make the experience feel less like a completely separate fan project and more like a missing piece of the game has been brought back. This atmosphere is what made Factions so beloved: slow, tense, and resource-management-based combat.
Naughty Dog’s canceled The Last of Us Online project was seen as having great potential even within the studio. Therefore, fans’ expectations for a multiplayer experience never faded. Speclizer’s mod won’t be an official release, but if it works correctly, it could fill that long-awaited void, at least on the PC side. For now, all eyes are on September 2026.
