The Science Fiction Thriller Game ONTOS has been Postponed to 2027
ONTOS, one of the most anticipated science fiction games of recent times, continues its development process. However, developer Frictional Games has announced that they need additional time to bring the project’s scope and story to the desired level. Therefore, a significant change has been made to the game’s planned release schedule.
ONTOS Delayed for a Bigger Vision
Publisher Kepler Interactive and developer Frictional Games announced that ONTOS has been delayed from its previously targeted 2026 release date to 2027. According to the statement, the team wants to bring their biggest and most ambitious project to players. Therefore, it was decided to extend the development period so that both the storytelling and gameplay systems could reach the expected quality.
Frictional Games, a studio known for the SOMA and Amnesia series, also emphasizes psychological thriller and science fiction elements in ONTOS. In the game, players control Aditi Amani, who arrives at a converted lunar hotel called Samsara after a mysterious invitation. Following the trail left behind by her father, Aditi will face experiments and unexpected events that challenge her perception of reality.
In terms of gameplay, ONTOS aims to go beyond classic puzzle-solving mechanics. Players will collect materials from the environment, operate complex machinery, and interact with analog systems. Furthermore, decisions made will directly affect not only the story but also the consequences. The development team aims to offer a system-driven structure that allows for different approaches rather than a single correct solution.
On the exploration side, the Samsara base is designed as a large, interconnected open space built on the ruins of an abandoned mining colony and a former luxury hotel. Different areas await players, including laboratories, theater stages, drained pools, and experimental areas set up in lunar caves. ONTOS is being developed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms. Following the postponement, Frictional Games also confirmed that new information about the game, characters, and universe will be shared in the coming period.
